The John G. Shedd Aquarium opened in 1930 and remains one of the largest indoor aquariums in the world, anchoring the south end of the Museum Campus with the lake on one side and the downtown skyline on the other. Its front steps offer one of the most photographed skyline views in Chicago.
The building is organized into immersive habitats. The central Caribbean Reef is a circular tank you can circle for a 360-degree view of rays, a sea turtle, and reef fish. Amazon Rising recreates a flooded South American rainforest; the Wild Reef puts you eye-to-eye with sharks through curved glass. The standout is the Abbott Oceanarium, a marine-mammal pavilion where beluga whales and Pacific white-sided dolphins swim against a wall of windows looking out onto Lake Michigan — the illusion that the pools merge with the lake is the building's signature trick.
It's a strong family attraction but designed thoughtfully enough to hold adults. Special experiences — behind-the-scenes tours, animal encounters, the 4D theater — are typically add-ons beyond general admission. As with the rest of the Museum Campus, mornings are calmest and the lakefront setting is half the appeal.
What to Expect
Format
Self-paced through themed habitats. General admission covers the main galleries and Oceanarium; add-ons cover special experiences and the 4D theater.
Best Time
Right at opening on a weekday, before school groups and the midday rush. The Oceanarium fills up fastest, so head there early.
Duration
3-4 hours for a thorough visit.
Tips
Go to the Abbott Oceanarium first thing for the marine mammals against the lake windows before crowds build. The front steps have one of the best skyline photo spots in the city — worth a few minutes before or after. Check whether the current add-ons (encounters, 4D film) are worth it for your group; the core galleries are plenty on their own.

Pair With
Field Museum and Adler Planetarium are walking distance on the Museum Campus. Pair with one, not both.
